Letter to the Editor
December 21, 2010

It is with much pleasure and gratefulness that I write this letter to thank the people of Mobile for making our first ever Christmas Tree Lot fundraiser a huge success!!  We sold out of our trees within ten days and raised over $14,000 for the Beverly M. Burton Scholarship Trust, which provides scholarships annually to the Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Year Recipient in Alabama. So much went into the planning for this event.  We received some wonderful advice from members of the Optimist Club, who have operated their Christmas Tree Lot for over 70 years.  It was a new and unique experience for all of us involved and we could not have accomplished it without such wonderful support. Our sincere thanks and gratitude goes out to Blue Rents, Robert Campbell of Lamar Advertising, Quick Buildings, LLC,  Southern Telecommunications, and to our wonderful volunteers, in particular Carl Cunningham and the Mobile Kappa League, St. Paul’s Episcopal School high school students (in particular the St. Paul’s football team), HandsOn South Alabama, and a special thanks to Laura Riggins.  We also appreciate all of our friends and supporters who bought our beautiful Frazer fir trees.

On another heartwarming note, many people donated money so that others could have a Christmas Tree this year.  One such recipient was Wyena Crook who is the smiling, cheerful Crossing Guard for Sidney Phillips Prep School.  During this blessed Christmas Season, we are thankful for so many things and we especially thank the “heart of a volunteer”.
